That article title is a handful but I’ll break it down here.
A political action committee that is connected to Trump through a treasurer, received donations from a handful of gigantic marijuana companies in the US. In total, they donated about $11.5 million to the PAC, which is titled America First Agriculture Action Inc. The companies who donated include Trulieve Inc., Curaleaf Inc., and Verano Holdings LLC.
The action committee, however, then turned around and spent some of that money on several Republican candidates campaigns for the November election. Some of these candidates, like Brian Fitzpatrick and Scott Perry, have been around long enough to vote against legal marijuana bills in 2020 and 2022 from Democrats.
There are a few others with anti-marijuana voting habits, although many are new and either haven’t yet been in office or haven’t been there long enough to have a record on the issue. Still, it’s enough to assume that the cannabis companies who gave their money probably wouldn’t be very happy with where it ended up.
That being said, the road to legalization is a windy one, and these companies may be playing the long game. Legalization itself is a knotty, partisan issue with nuance and perhaps if the right President came out in favor of it, these politicians would follow suit. That could be the thought process of putting money into this specific political action committee, and underneath that lens it makes much more sense. Especially with a president who is more and more desperate to get people to like him again.
Either way, I wouldn’t expect these donations to really have much of an impact whatsoever, so maybe they should have just kept the money.
