Key Vote Happening Next Week for LSD Legalization Bill in California

It’s been a long and Kafka-esque journey for the bill to legalize possession of small amounts of psychedelics in the state of California, but after large amounts of shuffling we may get a sense of its chances for survival next week.

Marijuana Moment reports that the bill has just passed through another reading on the chamber’s floor. But the real test comes on August 26, when it is held in a “suspense hearing” at the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Basically, it needs to pass through there, then be REREAD by the full floor by September 10 in order to be on the Governor’s desk by the end of the year.

It has the potential of being held in suspense at the Appropriations Committee step, which would effectively kill the bill entirely. Phew.

As a review, this bill, SB 519, would legalize possession of psilocybin, DMT, ibogaine, LSD, and MDMA for those over the age of 21. There has been some pushback when it came to a committee creating limits, but that doesn’t seem to have ruined the momentum for the bill. They have also removed ketamine from its list of drugs.

Big news should be coming on this front by the end of next week. Stay tuned.
