A letter from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to Representative Madeleine Dean from Pennsylvania was obtained by The Intercept which clearly states an expectation and likely support for FDA approval of psilocybin and MDMA therapy.
The letter, from May of this year, is centered specifically around therapy for those with PTSD and depression, but is the clearest sign of the Biden Administration’s support of using psychedelics in a legal setting.
The assistant secretary who wrote the letter, Miriam Delphin-Rittmon “agrees that too many Americans are suffering from mental health and substance use issues, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and that we must explore the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies to address this crisis.”
A task force that would enact these therapies was suggested by Representative Dean, showing that many lawmakers are trying to be proactive on a decision from the FDA that, at this point, seems inevitable.
This is exciting news, and head over to The Intercept to read the actual letter from the Biden Administration.
