Ireland Is Introducing A Bill To Legalize Recreational Marijuana

Ireland is the next country in Europe to work towards legalization of marijuana. Recently, the countries government introduced a bill to legalize recreational cannabis. The Irish parliament will begin discussing a bill introduced by the People Before Profit MP Gino Kenny. This bill looks to legalize marijuana for those at least 18 years of age and allow possession of up to 7 grams of cannabis or 2.5 grams of resin.

This new bill does not include any information regarding the cultivation or sale of cannabis so residents will likely still be buying the drug illegally.

“The Bill is quite moderate. It amends existing legislation that dates back 42 years. Forty-two years is a very long time. I believe the existing legislation is out of date and out of time. We need a different narrative around drug reform,” said TD Kenny during the debate in the Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish Parliament.

The debate over this bill is likely to happen early next year. Large support for legalized marijuana is spread throughout the population as well as the government.

If this bill is to pass, we can expect that Ireland will then push for the legal sale and opening of cannabis dispensaries in the country. Although this would not happen for quite some time, the steps are set in motion for this to happen eventually.
