Texas hemp processor to open in Houston

A hemp processor and extractor in Texas is working to establish operations in Houston.

Bayou City Hemp Co., founded by Houston natives Ben Meggs and Jeromy Sherman, has applied for hemp processing licenses through the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Additionally, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller appointed Sherman to serve on a state hemp advisory council.

“The growing hemp industry in our state is spurring job creation at every step of the process from seed to shelf,” Sherman said.

Bayou City Hemp Co. plans to process hemp for CBD isolates and distillates, working with farmers across the state.

The facility is expected to ready for operations this summer.

Texas has quickly established hemp processing and distribution busineses since the state legalized hemp production in June 2019 and the state received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its production plan in January.

Denver-based CBD maker CBD 100% Relief opened a new fulfillment center near Dallas this month. And in December, Panda Biotech announced it would open a large- scale industrial hemp processing and decortication center to produce textile-grade fiber and premium cellulose in Lubbock County, Texas.

The Texas Department of Agriculture opened the application process for hemp production and processing last week.
