Statement on New NIH Survey Results Showing Stable Marijuana Use & Decline in Marijuana Vaping Among Youth, Despite Legalization Spreading to More States

New York, NY – In response to the National Institute of Health (NIH)’s Monitoring the Future 2020 results showing stable marijuana use and a decline in marijuana vaping among youth—Sheila Vakharia, PhD, Deputy Director of the Department of Research & Academic Engagement for the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), released the following statement:

“Once again, another survey of our nation’s youth reveals that our young people are making informed choices for their own health. It is reassuring to see that rates of marijuana use among our young people have not increased, even as we have moved forward with more progressive marijuana policy reform. As of election day, the public has spoken and voters in 15 states and the District of Columbia have shown their support for legalizing access to marijuana. Regulated markets can help to restrict access to underage minors while protecting public health.”
